Surprised By Grace

Dec 28, 2025    Don Chandler

In this message, Bro. Don preaches from 2 Samuel chapter 9, using the story of Mephibosheth to illustrate the transforming power of God’s grace. He recounts how King David, honoring his covenant with Jonathan, sought out Mephibosheth—the crippled grandson of Saul who was hiding in Lodabar—and brought him into the palace to eat at the king’s table continually. Bro. Don explains that just as Mephibosheth did nothing to earn this favor, believers are likewise “surprised by grace,” pursued and welcomed by a sovereign God not because of merit but because of covenant love fulfilled in Christ. He emphasizes that grace reaches out to the disregarded, welcomes them in, lifts them up with new provision and purpose, and secures their place in the King’s family. Though Mephibosheth remained physically crippled, his condition was hidden beneath the king’s table—a picture, Bro. Don says, of how believers, though still flawed, are covered by grace. He closes by urging listeners to respond to God’s call, leave their spiritual “Lodabar,” and trust in Christ as children of the King.
